Assignment 2:Blind

Obvious errors

  1. The heroine uses a video phone (or touchscreen phone). I think it is very difficult for blind people to use such mobile device. First, the buttons of this sort of phones re virtual, which are arduous to touch for blind person. Second, their positions can change to adapt to different user-interfaces, which further intensified the difficulty. Although the touchscreen phone can read the screen for users, but it is still very hard to press a certain place without seeing that. So it may cause the abuse. The touchscreen phone’s user-interface demands a deeper interaction between user’s eyes and the screen. Even the heroine was very familiar with how to use this phone, it is challenging to use it properly, not to mention the mistakes due to her blindness. Compared with touchscreen phone, the phone with bigger physical keyboard can be better.
  2. There is a fish tank in the heroine’s house. The tank is placed on a chair in the turning between the kitchen and the bedroom, with water and fishes in it. In my opinion, blind people seldom keep a fish tank in their house. Firstly, there is no need to put a fish tank in the house because they cannot see it and look after the fish neither. Secondly, if the tank is knocked down due to some carelessness, water and glass fragments will scatter on the floor, which is very dangerous for the blind people.
  3. The heroine can detect the suspect’s voice by using voice recorder. I believe that the blind people have a sharper and more sensitive hearing than normal people, but it is still very hard for them to recognize a certain people’s voice among many different people’s voice by recorder.

Interesting observations

  1. The blind people have a more sensitive smelling and hearing. In this movie, the heroine can tell people’s age, height, and figure just according to her intuition, she is able to notice some special smelling as well to perceive the surrounding environment, such as what the police ate and sterilizer. These details can be ignored by normal people.
  2. The way of reading and surfing the internet of the blind people is inspiring. When reading a book, the heroine can sense the braille with fingers and then search something on the internet by typing words with a special keyboard, and the computer will read the result for her. I think it may take them a long time to learn using the keyboard, but this kind of products really allow them access to the internet.
  3. The relationship between the guide dog and the heroine is far more complicated than I thought. We can see that the heroine has developed a very deep sentiment with her dog, and the dog sacrificed to protect her. I realized the guide dog means a lot to the blind people, maybe more like a friend even a life partner rather than a pet. Maybe other technical products can guide the blind people better, but their roles as an emotional attachment can never be replaced.
